72 MahJongg tiles of 6 different colors and 6 different symbols (2 tiles of each symbol and color combination).
To place all of the tiles onto the layout.
| • | 12 columns and 8 rows (96 spaces) - At the start of the game, 4 tiles are automatically placed at the four corners and two tiles are placed near the middle. These 6 initial tiles are chosen to represent all of the 6 colors and 6 symbols. |
| • | The remaining tiles are placed in the stock (wall) at the top of the screen, where the next tile to be played is displayed face up. |
The face up tile in the stock is placed on an empty space in the layout, according to the following rules:
| • | If a tile is placed next to another tile, it must match all adjacent tiles (left, right, top, or bottom, but not diagonal). A matching tile is one that has either the same color or the same symbol (or both). |
| • | A tile may be placed in any space where there are no adjacent tiles (left, right, top, or bottom). |
| • | If the tile is placed adjacent to only one other tile, it must match that tile (color, symbol, or both). |
| • | If the tile is placed next to two other tiles, it must match one by color and the other by symbol. |
| • | If the tile is placed next to three other tiles, it has to match all three, at least one by color and another by symbol. The third match can be either by color or symbol. |
| • | If the tile is placed next to four other tiles (is completely surrounded), it must match two of them by color and the other two by symbol. |
To play the tile in an empty square, simply left click there. Right-clicking will show all legal placements for the tile.
| • | The game is won when all tiles are legally placed within the layout, leaving the stock empty. Note that there are 96 spaces but only 72 tiles, so the layout will not be completely filled; however, there are enough tiles that placing tiles with multiple neighbors is essential. |
| • | Free Stones is MahJongg Stones except that tiles may be placed in spaces where there are no adjacent tiles. |
